Our ego is that part of us that we call the” personality”. It is developed through time by our environment, family, friends, teachers and events. We can detect our ego most presently when we have the need to be right. Even if being right means the total alienation of another person.
We have developed our ego to interact with the physical world; it protects us from physical harm and emotional pain. We depend on it so much that we have forgotten who we are. For instance, it is like a woman that loves her children, takes care of them and plays the role of mom at every given moment that she now only identifies herself as a mom.
To tell her that she isn’t a mom but a beautiful feminine soul that mothers her children that she loves very much might upset her. The reason why it might upset her is because of the beliefs that she has internalized. Anything but the identification as a mom will mean to her that she doesn’t love her kids. She must be identified by something physical and by what other deem acceptable. Challenging this means sentencing the ego to death and inherently the ego fears its own death.
Once the ego doesn’t exist (and it doesn’t) we assume nothing is left and no one wants to be nothing – we all want to be something. Wanting to always acquire more is only a need of the ego which can never be fulfilled. Once it’s satisfied it will want more of something else which turns into an unending cycle. Consider this cycle as birth and death; something is created and then it dies and then the cycle repeats itself. As long as we are attached to the ego this cycle will never end. Why do you think some people that acquire wealth become bored, give up their wealth unconsciously, become unfulfilled or commit suicide? It is also a fact that within 3 years of retirement most of them die.
Beyond survival and living in abundance there is something else that needs to be fulfilled. We have two basic needs, the needs of the material word and the needs of the spiritual world. The problem is that we try to fill the needs of the spiritual word the same needs as the material world. “If I get rich, then I’ll be happy!” Both needs need to be filled – So that means you should strive for riches and greatness both in material world where you can see you and I and in the spiritual world where we are all connected.
Each soul requires different things to fulfill its needs, it is up to you to find your soul and listen to what it has to tell you. The soul has no texture, no scent or taste, nothing that your five senses can detect but you can experience its presence. Please participate in this exercise with me and be open for inner search. Notice in the following sentence “My name is Ryan.” That “My” has something called a name and that name is Ryan. “I am a mother that loves her children” Once again this “I” has gained a title because it has children to which it loves very much. Both of these sentences don’t explain who the”I/My/It” is only what it has acquired.
Some may argue that the “I” is a human being but to be human you must have a human body which is something the “I” acquired through the process of birth. Then you can argue that the “I” is the mind but the mind is only a tool that the “I” uses to think. You can see evidence of this just in our sentence structures alone. “I think”. Who is the “I” doing the thinking? So, it isn’t the summation of accomplishments, the body in which it exist, or the mind which it uses to think, so what is it? It is the unchanging consciousness present in all of us. Realize that this “I” has never changed. It has acquired a body, growth of body, acquires experience, intelligence, family, lovers, deceivers, names, pets, marriages, divorces, triumphs, disgraces, honor, retirement, disease, virus and death of the body. All these and more are just things it has acquired along its human journey but the essential “I” has never changed. It is pure consciousness, it just is which makes it universal and it is the same consciousness that we all have.
Imagine a single piece of cloth and pieces of it is held into place by a ring. Now imagine billions of rings now appear and hold different parts of the one cloth into place. Now each ring becomes its own identity or own ego so that it can communicate with itself. Over time these rings began to see themselves as different and argue and fight over their differences. An outside would look and see that it’s just one cloth with a bunch of rings on it and pretty much see how ridiculous they are being and even hurting itself.
Now consider a pot of hot liquid gold. Out of this pot a bracelet, necklace and earrings are made. Notice they are distinct in their shape, size and monetary value. Now imagine over time they have each developed their respective personalities. “I am a necklace. I am larger than the rest of you, used for only special occasions and worth a lot more than all of you combined.” “I am a ring. I am the symbol of love. I am worn on every married couple’s finger. Don’t compare yourself to me!”
You can try to explain to them that they are all the same essentially, just pieces of gold just shaped differently and in different amounts. They will argue back showing you physical proof in their appearance, use and value that they are different. Once they realize that they are from the same pot then I will assure you that they will communicate different. This realization can also mean that they can tap back into this pot and become anything they want because the potential is unlimited. The ego would dissolve because you don’t have to protect the ego anymore. If you knew you could do and be anything would you be as attached to your ego?
So the next time someone asks you who you are tell them “I am you, just in another body, different experiences and live events”. They’ll look at you weird and think you’re weird and you probably are. |
